WHAT IS EQUINE PSYCHOTHERAPY?

  • Psychological intervention is based on principles of Gestalt Therapy which focuses on the client's experience in the present moment to develop new skills to respond more effectively to challenge

  • The psychologist works with the client to increase their self-awareness or ability to self-regulate

  • The psychologist offers the client an experience with a consenting horse, an 'Equine Experiment' so that the client can further practice self-regulation whilst intensifying awareness of themselves, their relationships and their environment

  • Equine Experiments might involve activities such as:

    • observing horses

    • meeting horses or interacting at liberty

    • working with horses on a lead

    • working with horses through obstacles

    • grooming horses

    • mounted experiments with experienced riders

  • The psychologist then facilitates an integration discussion so that the client can take these new discoveries from the session and respond to life's demands with more awareness, choice and flexibility.
