Psychological therapy with Horses
EQUINIMITY
WHAT IS EQUINE PSYCHOTHERAPY?
-
Psychological intervention is based on principles of Gestalt Therapy which focuses on the client's experience in the present moment to develop new skills to respond more effectively to challenge
-
The psychologist works with the client to increase their self-awareness or ability to self-regulate
-
The psychologist offers the client an experience with a consenting horse, an 'Equine Experiment' so that the client can further practice self-regulation whilst intensifying awareness of themselves, their relationships and their environment
-
Equine Experiments might involve activities such as:
-
observing horses
-
meeting horses or interacting at liberty
-
working with horses on a lead
-
working with horses through obstacles
-
grooming horses
-
mounted experiments with experienced riders
-
-
The psychologist then facilitates an integration discussion so that the client can take these new discoveries from the session and respond to life's demands with more awareness, choice and flexibility.
